What is WiFi?

WiFi is a network of devices connected wirelessly. Wireless communication is made possible through a networking device called a wireless router.

Scenario:

  • Let us say you want to access Internet from a variety of devices at home through a single broadband Internet connection.
  • Purchase a wireless router and have the Internet connection provider configure it for you to use.
  • Now the router beams signals around a radius of about 20 feet or more, depending on the device capability.
  • Any device, such as a mobile phone or a tablet that is WiFi-enabled, detects the signal and is ready to receive communication from the router. When you start scanning for a wireless network from your mobile device, it shows the home wireless network that is set up by your Internet provider.
  • Once your device is connected, you are ready to use the Internet connection from the router. You can start browsing the web.
  • If the router asks for a password, you will have to supply it. The Internet provider configures the router with a password of your choice.
